Comfort Connect Team Spotlight: Nick Baker

Our new LP Comfort Connect technology provides a unique platform for delivering smart, customizable products to our customers. However, this innovation would never have been possible without the dedicated work of our Comfort Connect team. They collaborated to find unique solutions, improve processes, and differentiate our company in the marketplace through the development of this technology. Today we shine a light on just one of those team members.

Nick Baker began his career at L&P in early 2018, when he was hired as a Software Engineer. Since that time, he has participated in many research and development projects, while specializing in mobile applications.

In 2019, he was asked to join the team for L&P’s new Comfort Connect™ technology – proprietary hardware and software which are integrated to support L&P’s newest adjustable bed product. All movements and feature sets of the bed can be controlled through an app, which Nick played a major hand in developing.

At the forefront of the project, the team was focused solely on development for Android devices. However, Nick recommended a new technology, which allowed them to begin coding for both iOS and Android in a single code base. This shift allowed them to create the app at a much quicker pace, considerably reducing time to market and lowering costs of development and maintenance.

One unique feature of the app is its ability to automatically self-configure when connected to a bed in L&P’s Comfort Connect™ product line. Because the beds can include a variety of features – including articulation, massage, and lighting – this feature makes initial setup for a particular model a more seamless process for the user.

“By observing common interactions with the features on the app, we can customize the technology over time,” says Nick. “This allows us to continually improve the experience of our customers. It also provides valuable feedback for our sales team.”

As new features are added to the product line, they are integrated into the app. Nick’s team has also worked to continually improve the product through user testing.

“It was always my goal to create an solution that can compete with the newer technologies trending today,” shares Nick. “The result feels clean, modern, and easy to navigate. I’m really proud to have been a part of it.”

The LP Comfort Connect app is now available for download in Google Play and App Store.

What the Covid-19 Pandemic Taught Us

The past year has shown us just how resilient our people really are. We asked several employees what the COVID-19 pandemic taught them.

L&P Sustainability Efforts: Responsible Forestry

Our facilities are actively working to reduce the environmental impact associated with our production methods, including using responsible sourcing methods.

We use wood in various bedding products, including static foundations. Every year, approximately half of the wood we use in our U.S. bedding products comes from Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)-certified sources*. We’re also increasing the use of FSC-certified wood products in our Work Furniture business to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re sharing our top tips to help relieve anxiety and overcome stress.

L&P Sustainability Efforts: Recycled Steel

Our facilities are actively working to reduce the environmental impact associated with our production methods, including through the use of recycled materials.

Steel is our principal raw material. The wire we produce from steel is used in various products, including mattress innersprings. The majority of the scrap steel we use is shipped from less than 120 miles away — and 15% is shipped from within 5 miles.

L&P Brazil Designated as a Great Place to Work

Last month, L&P Brazil completed an employee engagement survey as part of their application for Great Place to Work certification. All employees were invited to participate in the survey anonymously, which was conducted by the GPTW Institute.

Results showed that 83% of L&P Brazil employees have a very favorable opinion about their facility, managers, and our company. These employees responded that they take pride in the work they are doing, feel it is an emotionally healthy place to work, feel supported and appreciated, and can depend on their leaders. Many of the participants also left written comments to further improve the culture at the facility.

We are very proud of their facility and know that it takes everyone working together to drive such a positive working environment. The high score they received on the survey qualified L&P Brazil to be certified as a Great Place To Work company for the second year in a row.

In celebration, all employees received a commemorative t-shirt to thank them for their efforts over the past year. A special lunch was prepared for employees working in the facility and a box of snacks was delivered to all remote workers.

“It’s exciting to work in a company where employees recognize that they are important. This certification was only possible because of the intense effort they give each day,” says Gustavo Lemos, President of L&P South America.

“It’s simple,” he continues. “We are defined by our people.”

We couldn’t agree more.
