“I Try to Be a Life Saver to My Colleagues”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Meet Portia Phifer, HR and Safety Manager at our Flooring Products facility in Statesville, North Carolina. She has worked with us for 4 years.

“As HR and Safety Manager, I most enjoy meaningful interactions with our people. If there are issues that they need help with, I am here to assist them. I pride myself on being approachable and easy to talk to. I even keep a dish of Life Savers on my desk as a reminder that I will definitely try to be a ‘life saver’ to my colleagues and in matters at our workplace.

I am most proud that while I didn’t take a traditional route of furthering my education, I was able to complete two degrees as a working adult.

I am excited that Leggett & Platt sees the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of African Americans. We benefit from many inventions on a daily basis that were directly contributed by African Americans. While I try to reflect on the history of African Americans on a consistent basis, this month’s acknowledgments and celebrations make me proud of the contributions made by people like me.

I think it’s important for my grandchildren to understand that they stand on the shoulders of great men and women, and they can accomplish great things as well.”

“I Have the Opportunity to Excel”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Meet Marché Favors. She is a Senior HR Generalist at one of our Elite Comfort Solutions (ECS) facilities. She has worked with us for 5 years.

“In my role, I enjoy working with people and assisting employees through the hiring process and watching their development in their respective roles. My role is important because I engage with employees from the start of their employment journey with ECS. I introduce them to the company and remain connected throughout to assist as needed.

Celebrating Black history in February is special. It gives me a sense of pride to know that I have the opportunity to excel and to be successful in life. I am truly thankful to those who came before me and sacrificed in so many ways.”

“I Am, By Far, Proudest of My Family and Faith”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Scoval Blevins is the Branch Manager at our Elite Comfort Solutions (ECS) facilities in Newnan, Georgia. He’s been with ECS for 8 years.

“My favorite thing about what I do is working with, mentoring, and helping to shape individuals. I truly value relationships, and I enjoy seeing individuals excel toward their greatest potential.

I am, by far, proudest of my family and faith. These two pieces of my life are the most important to me and have the greatest impact in everything I do.

Black History Month means a lot to me because it highlights for everyone the impacts by Black Americans. It further sheds great light on the advancements Black Americans have made throughout American history. There are strides still left to be made.”

“I Try to Celebrate My Heritage Every Day”

During Black History Month, we’re inviting L&P employees to share about what inspires them most.

Meet Sharon Pratt. She is a Routing Coordinator at our Flooring Products facility in Houston, Mississippi. She has been with L&P for 15 years.

“I enjoy talking to the customers and interacting with so many of them over the phone every day. I feel my job is important because I’m the person listening and trying to make sure that they are happy and get what they need on their delivery.

I am very proud to have a job that helps me as a single mother to be financially able to provide for my daughter.

To some, Black history may only be celebrated during the month of February, but not for me. I try to celebrate my heritage every day. I am a proud Black woman who has overcome so many adversities. With that being said, I think it is great that we celebrate our ancestors and share their contributions and achievements with others during the month of February.”

“I’m fortunate to see how our employees take pride in the quality of product they produce. My team makes the core unit of mattresses we all sleep on. Employee Spotlight: Sabine Winkler

We think one of the most exciting things about working for a global company is the friendships you make with people from all over the world – and one of our newest Automotive team members, Sabine Winkler, agrees. We reached out to learn more about Sabine and her new position as Global Product & Marketing Communications Manager for L&P Automotive.

What are you most excited for in your new role?
Business to business (B2B) Brands that are able to show the human side of their company are always a step ahead. I want to find ways to demonstrate the passion we have for our products, why our employees stay, and the factors that make our work so enjoyable. I plan on contributing a lot of my skills in this area and hope those efforts will be appreciated and valued by the global team.

How long have you been in the marketing/communications industry?
I have worked in a variety of industries and departments during my career, 20 of which were in global marketing and communications. I don’t think ‘age’ matters in marketing because everything is constantly evolving. When I started, print and direct marketing was the main focus. Digital came next and now there are a wide array of marketing initiatives. Yet, there is one constant…. it’s all about people. Without a focus on people, you miss a huge opportunity.

What passions do you have outside of work?
In my free time, I enjoy making lavender sachets and beeswax candles which I sell online. That small business still requires the same skillsets — I have to consider product packaging and how to bring it to life so that people will choose to buy your product. In selling, it is so important to use the right keywords and select compelling photos. I’m still learning a lot, even with my marketing skills.

What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
I once had an amazing boss who was very people oriented. It really stuck with me when one of our colleagues said, “When people speak about him, they have a smile on their face.” He was well-respected and liked because he took the time to know his team members as individuals.

I want to apply a lot of what I learned from him. He made time to learn about everyone’s work, even if it was just a tiny part in the big wheel. He was in charge of a difficult, company-changing project, and we all supported him. He intuitively understood how each member of the team wanted to be led. The extra effort he exhibited was appreciated and we wanted him to succeed, too. I’m so grateful that he taught me how to be more than just the ‘boss.’

Employee Spotlight: Tengfei Han

“I’m proud to support our teams with my role in quality control. I carefully inspect our products to ensure they are stable and reliable for our customers.”

Employee Spotlight: JT Warren with Hanes Geo Components

Our Hanes Geo Components division in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is an industry-leading supplier of geosynthetics and environmental products. Their products, including erosion control, stormwater, and landscaping fabrics may not be particularly glamourous. However, the marketing team enjoys finding creative ways to promote these textiles to their buyers. We reached out to JT Warren, Marketing Coordinator, to learn more about him and his role.

What brought you to L&P?
During my senior year at Appalachian State University, I held an intern position at Hanes Geo Components. I worked in the product management department and during that time, I was impressed with the dedication that our employees have, how they treat one another, and how the “Hanes Geo Family” wanted to build something special; I wanted to be a part of that as well.

What does your average day look like?
I start each day with a cup of coffee as soon as I walk in the door – and this is arguably the most important part of my day! I spend my morning responding to any emails that need my attention (I can’t stand a cluttered inbox!) and check out the analytics for our social sites. The numbers give me an idea of how to interact with my audience in a more captivating way. I brainstorm new marketing campaign ideas, read articles on how to market products successfully, and create content throughout the day. Meetings are sprinkled in during the week as well as lots of practice on difficult Adobe platforms.

What’s something surprising about you?
I have been playing guitar for almost 8 years! I can’t say that I am that good, but I love playing music!

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Each day that I go to work, I get to come in with a creative mindset. I research ways to differentiate our brand while still maintaining a positive presence online. As a young professional, I have realized that I thrive off of new challenges and ideas. I believe that breakthroughs are made in an ever-changing environment.

When I post content, it gives people a glimpse into the world of Hanes Geo Components and I enjoy learning new ways to engage with our followers.

National Hispanic Heritage Month: Gerardo Lopez

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re sharing the stories of several Latinx employees within our U.S. facilities.

“We educate operators to produce quality products that help our customers sleep better. I’m proud of the diverse skill set every individual on our team presents. We all feel a sense of accomplishment when we fix a machine and get it running. Being able to pass my expertise on to both our English and Spanish speaking operators allows me to help them grow their careers, too.”
