5 Office Must-Haves: Randi Preece in Environmental Affairs

If you want to get to know Leggett & Platt, you should get to know our people first. What better way for you to do that than by seeing a few of their favorite things.

Randi’s role: Corporate Environmental Auditor

Job in a nutshell: Helping operations maintain federal and state regulatory environmental compliance and implementing the Eco Initiative.

  1. Jacket – My office is freezing!
  2. Calendar – Call me old school, but I can remember better if I physically write down meetings, appointments, and to-do’s.
  3. iPhone Mobile Charging Pack – I travel a few times per month for environmental audits. The charging pack holds three full charges for my iPhone, which allows me to pass time at airports and on flights. I hate worrying about a dead phone!
  4. Coffee – My morning pick-me-up. I prefer two cups in the morning (maybe one in the afternoon) and I take it black — no cream, no sugar.
  5. Map – Whether by map or GPS, I’m always navigating new cities. I have a giant map of the United States on my office wall, and it helps when I’m planning the next few months of travel for work.

10 Customer-Relationship Commandments

Note: This material was pulled from our in-house class, Customer Focus, taught by Director of Learning & Development Alissa Owsley. For more learning content like this, check out our 2-part SlideShare series on The Art of Coaching Employees and 6 Truths about Persuasion.

At Leggett & Platt we equate good customer service with good relationship-building skills. The bond between you and your customer—whether within your company (say a peer or your boss) or external (the traditional “customer”)—is just that, a relationship that needs attention and takes work.

With that in mind, we’ve come up with 10 universal customer-relationship commandments. You don’t have to have “customer service representative” in your title to get something out of these. Continue reading

The Impressive Operations of Sterling Steel

Did you know that the largest Electric Arc Furnace in North America belongs to one of our very own manufacturing facilities? In 2002, Leggett & Platt purchased a portion of the former Northwestern Steel & Wire facility in Sterling, Illinois, now known as Sterling Steel. Following major renovations in the melt shop and rod mill, the plant began operating in early 2003.

Sterling Steel

With a mission to be the safest and lowest-cost supplier of quality rod, Sterling produces about 10,000 tons of wire rod every week. The branch ships the wire rod to Leggett’s wire mills to be used in products such as mattresses, furniture, bale ties, and certain automobile applications.

Kevin Mullen, President of Sterling Steel, has been with Leggett & Platt since it acquired Sterling Steel. As a native of Sterling, Illinois, Kevin grew up in the steel industry. He is his family’s fourth generation of steel industry workers and a third-generation hire at Sterling, Illinois site. “One of my favorite things about Leggett,” said Kevin, “is the insight and willingness of company leaders to invest in new equipment and processes, which allows us to continue supplying a quality product safely.” Continue reading
