New Year, New Perspectives: Melissa Shaddix

To kick off 2023, we want to introduce you to several of our newest employees and share their goals for this year.

First up, meet Melissa Shaddix! Melissa is a Technical Writer for our Corporate Information Technology (IT) Department.

What brought you to L&P?

I’m excited to be a part of the long history of L&P’s leadership in many industries and the new initiatives underway in the IT Department.

My new colleagues have been so welcoming and helpful! I joined L&P during a very busy time, yet so many people have taken time to get to know me and help me feel welcome. I think the collaboration and culture I’ve seen bode very well for my future here.

What’s something unique about you?

I went to a university with a prominent horticulture research department, and I had a part-time job grading the pecans harvested from research orchards throughout my state. The results of my grading were used in several multi-year research projects that impacted U.S. pecan growers. I never got to eat a single test pecan.

What’s your biggest goal for 2023?

I’ve seen a trend where some social media influencers set “yearly themes” as a baseline ideal to guide their intentions and decisions. I’d like to try it this year with the theme of “balance.” To me, practicing balance—both physically and mentally—can improve coordination during challenging tasks and help prevent falls and failure. In 2023, I’ll try to approach all of my goals with a focus on balance to ensure that I won’t just excel at one while neglecting the rest.

L&P Hosts Students from the University of Missouri’s Cornell Leadership Program

We were excited to welcome students from the University of Missouri’s (MU) Cornell Leadership Program to our corporate headquarters in Carthage, Missouri, to learn about our company and from our leaders.

The Cornell Leadership Program was established by a financial gift from Harry M. Cornell, Jr., our CEO from 1960 to 1999, and gives students at MU’s Trulaske College of Business an opportunity to build leadership and business skills.

During the two-day visit, students toured our local Idea Center and Machine Products branches and enjoyed discussions, presentations, and Q&A panels. Many of our L&P presenters are proud MU alumni!

Georgetown Branch Receives Governor’s Safety and Health Award

L&P’s branch in Georgetown, Kentucky, recently received the Governor’s Safety and Health Award!

The team worked 801,564 hours—at least 24 months—without a serious work-related injury or illness that resulted in an employee being away from work for an extended period of time. During the award ceremony, a representative from the Kentucky Department of Labor congratulated Georgetown on their commitment to employee safety.

Ethan Kiser, Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager at Georgetown, said, “Our team puts safety and health at the forefront of our operations through internal safety audits, extensive employee engagement in our safety program, thorough and effective incident investigation, and by ensuring our employees are effectively trained for their positions and able to identify and protect themselves and their team against any safety hazards in their areas.

Keeping our employees safe is our most important job. This job is a moral responsibility, and it is critical to make safety a top priority to ensure all employees return home each night in as good or better shape than they arrived. Our employees are the backbone of Leggett & Platt, and when they feel safe at Georgetown, our business thrives.”

We are so proud of this team for putting people first by prioritizing safety and care for each other!
