Hanes Fabric Enters the Retail Market with Muslin

When Hanes Industries joined L&P in 1993, they focused mostly on the furniture, bedding, and automotive markets, making them a great fit with L&P’s existing endeavors. Since then, they have expanded into other fabric markets including drapery, packaging, geosynthetics, landscaping and more.

Hanes Fabric’s new line of muslin utilizes the same high-quality processes and finishes that their brand is known for. It is a very versatile fabric which is used in a variety of crafting applications including quilting, home décor, pattern making, and other art projects. Currently, our facility produces both bleached (white) and unbleached (natural) fabrics.

In the past, Hanes Fabric sold only through wholesale transactions with other manufacturers or distributors. However, the new muslin line is being sold directly to retailers like Hobby Lobby, Amazon, Walmart, Joann’s, and Fabric.com.

“Hanes Fabrics is a recognizable name for buyers,” says Danny Campolieta, Senior Product Manager for HCC/HFC Wovens. “What makes this new project so exciting is that it places our fabrics directly in front of those end consumers. Muslin is a staple in the craft market and a great opportunity for our brand to expand upon in the retail space.”

Comfort Connect Team Spotlight: Nick Baker

Our new LP Comfort Connect technology provides a unique platform for delivering smart, customizable products to our customers. However, this innovation would never have been possible without the dedicated work of our Comfort Connect team. They collaborated to find unique solutions, improve processes, and differentiate our company in the marketplace through the development of this technology. Today we shine a light on just one of those team members.

Nick Baker began his career at L&P in early 2018, when he was hired as a Software Engineer. Since that time, he has participated in many research and development projects, while specializing in mobile applications.

In 2019, he was asked to join the team for L&P’s new Comfort Connect™ technology – proprietary hardware and software which are integrated to support L&P’s newest adjustable bed product. All movements and feature sets of the bed can be controlled through an app, which Nick played a major hand in developing.

At the forefront of the project, the team was focused solely on development for Android devices. However, Nick recommended a new technology, which allowed them to begin coding for both iOS and Android in a single code base. This shift allowed them to create the app at a much quicker pace, considerably reducing time to market and lowering costs of development and maintenance.

One unique feature of the app is its ability to automatically self-configure when connected to a bed in L&P’s Comfort Connect™ product line. Because the beds can include a variety of features – including articulation, massage, and lighting – this feature makes initial setup for a particular model a more seamless process for the user.

“By observing common interactions with the features on the app, we can customize the technology over time,” says Nick. “This allows us to continually improve the experience of our customers. It also provides valuable feedback for our sales team.”

As new features are added to the product line, they are integrated into the app. Nick’s team has also worked to continually improve the product through user testing.

“It was always my goal to create an solution that can compete with the newer technologies trending today,” shares Nick. “The result feels clean, modern, and easy to navigate. I’m really proud to have been a part of it.”

The LP Comfort Connect app is now available for download in Google Play and App Store.

Comfort Connect Team Spotlight: Ashton McGehee

Our new LP Comfort Connect technology provides a unique platform for delivering smart, customizable products to our customers. However, this innovation would never have been possible without the dedicated work of our Comfort Connect team. They collaborated for several years to find unique solutions, improve processes, and differentiate our company in the marketplace through the development of this technology. Today we shine a light on just one of those team members.

Ashton McGehee began her career at Leggett in 2017, when she was hired as a Product Documentation Intern. That opportunity taught her a lot about our company and our products, as she designed and illustrated user manuals and operating guides. Having since accepted a full-time position as an Industrial & Graphic Designer, her project scope has expanded to include component design, concept animations, and assembly videos as well.

Ashton’s supervisor, impressed with her dedication and design skills, recommended her to join the development team of L&P’s new Comfort Connect™ technology – proprietary hardware and software which are integrated to support L&P’s newest adjustable bed product. All movements and feature sets of the bed are controlled through the LP Comfort Connect™ app, which was also developed by the team.

For her role, Ashton was tasked with designing and illustrating the assembly guide, remote guide, and instructional manual for the bed. She also designed the remote, icons and branding for the app.

“I’m really proud of the screenshots I designed for the app store and the icon for the app itself,” says Ashton. “I’ve never worked on a mobile application professionally before. It was really interesting, and I definitely learned a lot.”

Designing the app icon was a particular challenge because the team wanted a design that would be a true reflection of the product’s user benefits and future capabilities. Ultimately, Ashton and Scott Clark, Director of Marketing + Creative, combined several of their ideas to form the final design. The icon incorporates a house, which they felt represents the way Comfort Connect™ technology allows the consumer to tailor a key part of every home, the bedroom, to meet their specific needs.

Ashton has enjoyed having the opportunity to participate on this project, because it allowed her to design in new formats and to follow a new product from concept through development. However, she also appreciated the opportunity to collaborate with the team.

“Everyone I work with has been very professional and super enthusiastic about this project,” shares Ashton. “I can really thrive in such a positive and energetic work environment.”

LP Comfort Connect Creates New Opportunities

At L&P if there’s something to accomplish, we’re on it. Our teams regularly roll up their sleeves, looking for unique solutions, improved processes and innovative products to differentiate our company in the marketplace. Our new LP Comfort Connect technology provides a unique platform for delivering smart, customizable products to our customers.

Developers and designers at L&P focus on creating product solutions to enhance our lives and solve our challenges. Several years ago, these teams began to explore how the benefits of automated, customizable bed products could help people sleep better and improve their overall health. After several years of research, development, and engineering, we’ve launched an exciting, new technology platform – LP Comfort Connect™.

“Over recent years, interactive products have become more prevalent and people are looking for ways to introduce more customizable devices in their homes,” says John Zanatta, Director of Sales. “Our team felt that we could integrate an adjustable bed base the same way.”

This led to the internal development of the hardware and software for L&P’s newest adjustable bed product. All movements and feature sets are controlled through the LP Comfort Connect™ app. Bed functions currently include articulation at four points of movement – allowing you to raise and lower the head or foot, lift your pillow, and adjust the lumbar support. It also offers massage, memory settings, USB charging, and a multi-colored underbed light.

Developing all of the hardware and software for an interactive product was a new venture for our teams. However, the approach was an important step toward differentiating the company from competition in the future.  LP Comfort Connect™ was designed to grow and change as new features are developed.

“We looked at this as a major opportunity. Because the technology is proprietary to our company, we control how the components function and work together,” says John. “This allows us to supply our customers with unique features, unavailable on other beds in the market.”

The bedroom of the future is coming, and we want it to come from Leggett & Platt.

Although Leggett & Platt Adjustable Beds are not sold directly to consumers, our products are available both online and in-store from retailers across the country. Product availability will vary by dealer. To see our product line-up, visit our website.

If you are a retailer who is interested in adding L&P products to your line, please contact your sales rep or visit our contact page.

Drawn Wire

Our Drawn Wire group supplies high-quality wire and wire products to customers around the world. We supply annealed and galvanized wire to various industries (think appliance, construction, automotive, furniture, and bedding, for example).

Quality is important to us. Whether it originates from our steel mill or from one of our trusted suppliers, wire is held to the same stringent requirements to assure maximum reliability and consistency.

Our annealed wire goes through an in-process annealing that heat-treats wire to restore ductility, making it easier to work with.

Our galvanized wire is available in both high-carbon and low-carbon options. This process keeps wire protected against scratches, rusting, and corrosion.

Standard Pocket Coil

Our standard and compact pocketed innersprings are comfortable and supportive. Individually pocketed coils conform to the contours of the body for superior comfort and reduced partner disturbance.

And since we draw our own wire, we guarantee the quality.
